情 (정)
The Korean word “뜻 정” (tteut-jeong) is a compound of two words: “뜻” (tteut) meaning “intention” or “will,” and “정” (jeong) which refers to a deep emotional bond, affection, or attachment that develops over time. “뜻 정” can be understood as a heartfelt emotional connection rooted in shared purpose, goodwill, or long-standing affection. It often arises in close relationships where people have gone through experiences together—such as between friends, family members, or even between a teacher and student, or neighbors.
Unlike romantic love or friendship in the Western sense, “뜻 정” is less about passion or social connection and more about loyalty, warmth, and an almost spiritual sense of caring that transcends specific acts. It carries a quiet but powerful emotional weight. There is no direct translation in English, but you might explain it as “a sincere emotional bond formed through shared intentions or meaningful time together.”
Jeong Arts & Culture seeks to share and showcase the beauty of traditional Korean culture with communities across the United States. Through these efforts, we aim to foster and extend the uniquely Korean sentiment known as “Jeong”—a deep emotional bond rooted in warmth, respect, and enduring connection. By presenting Korea’s rich heritage in music, dance, and art, we hope to create meaningful cultural exchanges that transcend language and background, allowing audiences to experience the heartfelt spirit and harmony that “Jeong” represents.
